2 “ One does not fertilize on the Sabbath, on holidays, or on the intermediate days of holidays, even if only for goodwill. One is not permitted to put a watchman there, nor to have the flock relieve themselves, and if they came by themselves one may not help them. But if they were working with him over the Sabbaths and holidays, he is permitted to put a watchman there, to have the flock relieve themselves, and if they came by themselves he may help them.” It was stated: “Rabban Simeon ben Gamliel says, on the Sabbath [workers] fertilize for goodwill, on the holidays for meals, and on the intermediate days of holidays even for wages.”
