תלמוד על תענית 2:1

HALAKHAH: “The order of these fast-days was said,” etc. What is their “immediately”? Rav said, Monday³The first Monday after the need became evident. Babli 19b., Thursday, and Monday. If it became abnormal on Monday, what about sounding the alarm on Thursday⁴But Mishnah 2:15 forbids to start a series of fast-days on Thursdays.? Rebbi Ze`ira understood it from the following⁵Dan. 10:12.: He said to me, do not fear, Daniel, since from the first day when you intended to fast before the Eternal, your God, your words were heard. Already your words were heard. And here, since the Court were determined to do it is as if they did⁶The fast-day is proclaimed immediately but executed only the next Monday..

“Onias the digger of ditches.” He was digging ditches and caves³⁷To create miqwaot for pilgrims to the Temple. and knew which rock cools the water and which rock was dry and how far its dryness extended. Rebbi Aḥa said, it is written⁴⁰Ps. 50:3., His surroundings are very hairy. He is exact with them like a hair’s width. Rebbi Yose said, not because of this reason, but because what is written⁴¹Ps. 89:8., He is awesome on His surroundings, His fear on those near Him is greater than those far away.

MISHNAH: He who enters a fortified place²¹⁶Greek χάραξ “palisade”. A Roman fortified camp with soldiers and police not under the control of the local authorities. prays two prayers, one when he enters and one when he leaves. Ben Azai said four, two when he enters and two when he leaves. He gives thanks for the past and implores for the future.
